Both homeowners and commercial businesses benefit from owning a steel carport. And with our cost-effective rates and excellent customer service, it’ll be hard to find a better deal elsewhere.

The Process of Buying a Steel Carport or a Portable Carport

We provide several ways for you to buy a steel carport or other type of portable car canopy. You can create a carport design from the ground up using our carport and garage builder. You also can call us directly at 1-877-275-7048 if you have special buildings requirements you need to meet.

Before finalizing your purchase, we recommend you do a few things:

  • Get an accurate measurement of the space you plan to anchor your car port
  • Ensure the surface where it will be anchored is not sloped; it should be level
  • If you’re planning to anchor it on concrete or asphalt, make sure you allow sufficient time for the concrete or asphalt to cure before your new carport arrives
  • Make sure the car port you order meets all local development standards
  • And make sure you have all the required building permits in order to set up a metal carport – or any other type of canopy – if those are required in your area

We Deliver Only the Highest Quality Carports to Your Home or Business

Once you’ve placed your order, you can expect your carport, carport kit or car canopy to be delivered in 2 to 12 weeks. You’ll typically hear from our schedulers in two to seven days prior to the delivery date. If you do not hear from anyone after four weeks, please contact us and we’ll check on the status of your order.

Although car ports can be simple to build, we don’t want you to have to deal with the hassle of doing it yourself. That’s why our customers get professional carport installation no matter what state the steel carport is sent to.

Installation of your portable carport will save you time and ensure the car port is installed 100 percent correctly. Our goal is to provide the best steel carports and customer service to every customer, whether they’re a homeowner or a business.

We highly recommend that someone be on site to meet the crew and ensure that everything goes smoothly. Once the crew arrives, you should verify they have the correct car port, and you may need to explain exactly where you want your carport installed.

Metal Carport General Customization Options

Our metal carport covers are available in any size you need, the specifications can be designed to cover all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, boats and recreational vehicles.

We also sell steel carports in bulk to commercial businesses. Metal carports are perfect for car dealers, RV dealers and boat dealers with large inventories, and other businesses, such as outdoor gardening shops. Our car ports have even been used to cover boat docks, tractors, dumpsters and rock piles in work yards.

While you could easily buy car port plans and go through the process of building your own carport structure, working with us ensures you receive a high-quality, long-lasting product.

Make Sure Your Car port Can Withstand Certain Weather Conditions

Although there are several factors to consider when buying a metal carport cover, the one thing everyone has to account for is the weather.

If you live near the coast, for example, you may want to choose our 12-gauge galvanized steel tubing, which is about 20 percent stronger than our standard 14-gauge galvanized steel tubing and includes a 20-year limited warranty for rust through the frame.

Areas that have harsh winters, like the Midwest, have to be able to withstand a lot of snow.

The best protection against the snow – in addition to completely closing in your carport – is adjusting the pitch of the roof on your car port. The roof pitch that comes standard on all our carports is 3/12, which means that for every foot of width, the roof slopes down three inches.

Increasing the pitch on a metal carport canopy roof prevents snow build-up, which reduces the amount of weight sitting on top of it at any one time. Long-term, this can keep the roof panels from bowing and potentially caving in.

Aside from the weather, carport design plans ultimately come down to practicality. In order to figure out how to customize it, you should nail down exactly how you plan to use it.

Steel Carports for Cars and Trucks

If you plan on using your carport primarily to cover cars and trucks that you drive on a daily basis, you may want your carport to match the design of your house, which means you should select a similar color.

You may also want to opt for a more stylish roof style, such as an A-frame roof, which is available in both horizontal — also known as boxed eave — and vertical styles.

Both our A-frame horizontal roof and A-frame vertical roof include trim on every eave, whereas the standard horizontal roof only has trim on the front and back of the carport. The A-frame vertical roof also comes with a ridge cap.

If you’re wanting to cover multiple vehicles, such as two cars, or a truck and a boat, you’ll need to account for car doors opening.

There are some guidelines you can use to estimate what size car port makes the most sense for you. In general, carports for cars and trucks fall under one of three ranges of sizes:

  • 12-foot wide carports: single car
  • 18- to 24-foot wide carports: two cars
  • 26- to 30-foot wide carports: three cars

The open end of the car port is considered the width. You should base the length on the distance your largest car, truck or other vehicle measures from front to back.

Metal Carports for Boats and Recreational Vehicles

For vehicles you don’t use on a daily basis, such as RVs, boats, ATVs or motorcycles, you may want to consider other factors, like what sort of effect long-term storage will have on their condition. That’s mainly because when those vehicles aren’t being used, they may be exposed to the elements.

For example, if you live in an area that has a very warm climate, such as in the Southern US, you may want to provide additional protection from the sun.

The best way to protect your vehicles from the sun is to add sides and end walls. If your vehicle is mostly hidden from the sun, you may only require partial sides, which provide some protection without completely enclosing the carport.

Not only that, but some vehicles – especially recreational vehicles – will not fit under a carport made for cars and trucks due to their height. You’ll need to buy a car port that has enough clearance height for your recreational vehicle.

All our units can be customized with 12-foot legs, which provide enough clearance for most travel trailers. But some RVs, such as class-A motorhomes, may require more clearance. If you’ll need legs taller than 12 feet, please contact us and we’ll help you design an RV carport that meets your requirements.

Make sure you measure the tallest point of your RV. That means taking into consideration a rooftop air condition unit, a satellite dish or anything else that impacts the total height.

The same goes for boats. Depending on how big your boat is, you may need a metal boat cover that’s taller than 12 feet. Also, when measuring the length of your boat, you may want to include the length of the trailer.

And if you are only storing motorcycles or ATVs, you could opt for a much smaller steel carport cover.

Carports Can Easily Be Used as Metal Storage Shelters

Don’t forget about our special utility carport storage shelters, which combine the overhead coverage of steel structures along with storage buildings in one unit. Whether it’s gardening and farming equipment, livestock or outdoor furniture and holiday decorations, there are a ton of reasons people add storage shelters to their steel carports.

Maybe you’ve run out of storage space in your house, or perhaps you’re tired of paying the monthly fee for a storage unit. Regardless of why you need additional detached storage space, our metal carports are a great solution.

There are multiple ways to design a car port so it includes storage space. You can design a stand-alone, enclosed carport, or you can section off a portion of a car port to include storage and use the remaining area to cover other vehicles.

If you don’t want to enclose any of your car port – and you live in an area with an extremely moderate climate – you can order one or our standard metal carports and use it as storage.

Portable Carports Canopies Are Easy to Set Up and Take Down

In addition to metal carports and shelters, we sell portable carports and carport awnings that are easy to set up, take down and move.

One of the biggest benefits of portable shelters is their versatility. A portable canopy can be used to cover the same vehicles as metal carports, including cars, trucks, RVs, boats, motorcycles and ATVs, but they have many other uses as well.

Large Portable Sun Shelters for Vehicles and Events

Our larger portable canopies range in size from 10-feet wide to 30-feet wide, which means they can cover just about any car or truck and can be used as portable sun shelters.

If you live in an area that has both severe winters and summers and need a temporary carport awning to protect your vehicles from the sun, a portable carport canopy is a great solution.

You may also own a summer vacation home that sits vacant for a lot of the year. If you would like a temporary carport awning for when you’re there in the summer, a portable carport canopy is what you need. And when you’re done using it for the year, you can take it down, fold up the canopy and easily store it until you’re ready to use it again.

If you regularly host family gatherings, cookouts, weddings or other events that would require you to frequently move your car port, a portable carport awning is exactly what you need.

We sell portable canopies in bulk as well, so whether you’re a venue or an equipment rental company, we can make sure you maintain a large stock of temporary canopies.

Patio Covers for Backyards, Porches and More

These covers are not designed to shelter vehicles, due to their smaller size. Most fall within a size range of between 8-feet and 12-feet wide. These smaller patio covers work great in backyards, on porches and on docks. They provide much-needed shade during the hottest months of the year, and can easily be stored when you’re not using them.

Our patio covers made with a pop-up design are easy to take to the park for a picnic or to sporting events. Most are large enough to fit at least one picnic table or several folding chairs, along with other items you may have, such as coolers.

Metal Carport and Portable Carport Add-ons and Accessories

We offer a wide selection of add-on components and accessories that will help take your steel carport cover, enclosed carport, storage shelter or portable carport canopy to the next level.

In most cases, you can add to an existing carport after it’s been installed. For example, you may decide after you’ve already purchased and installed a metal carport cover that you’d like to add some sides and end walls. Or you may want to add some windows to an already enclosed steel carport.

We also stock plenty of portable carport canopy accessories, and we sell a few different styles of anchors that you can use to keep your canopy attached to the ground. In addition, we sell roll-up door kits, which are great for keeping out bugs and rain.

If you’re looking to organize tools or other items you keep in your portable canopy, you can buy mountable tool holders and utility shelves.

There are some limitations, however. If you want to add a roll-up or walk-in garage door onto an existing metal carport cover, the car port must be at least 6 feet tall.

If you have questions about adding specific components to your carport, please contact us.

We Can Help Make Sure Your Steel Carport is Certified

The difference between a certified and non-certified building comes down to whether or not you have the proper permits for your steel carport cover or portable carport canopy. In order to get the permit, your structure must meet certain building requirements, and the permit verifies that.

Whether or not you need a building permit depends solely on your local development standards. In general, urban areas have more stringent development regulations than rural areas, but every municipality and county has their own rules.

That being said, there are a few universal factors that will likely be used to determine whether or not you’ll need a building permit for your metal carport cover.

For example, most areas have a minimum set-back distance for all structures – including steel carports and portable carports. Other possible factors include the size of your car port; some areas care about the square footage; some care about the height; some care about both.

Something that’s almost guaranteed to require a permit is running any sort of electricity to your metal carport – even if it’s just one light bulb that will only be used at night.

In addition, areas that are prone to strong winds or lots of snow may require you to obtain a building permit to ensure your carport isn’t ripped out of the ground or that it doesn’t collapse.

The Certification Process for Steel Carport Covers

The best way to find out if you need a permit or not is to call your local planning department. When you call, be prepared to explain what all will be included in your metal carport cover.

With that information, the planning department should be able to determine whether or not you need a building permit. If you do, you’ll have to fill out an application and you’ll likely have to pay a fee in order to obtain it.

You may be required to submit detailed drawings in your application of the work you’re planning to complete. We can provide engineered plans that show exactly how the steel carport you plan to purchase will be built, and confirm that it meets all the necessary conditions.

As long as there are no issues with your application, you’ll receive the work permit and be able to have your steel carport cover or portable canopy installed. If you’re required to have a building permit, It’s best to hold off on ordering your car port until you’ve received approval from your local planning department.

Although carport plans for a certified building can require a lot of time and effort, purchasing a certified steel carport made of quality materials is more convenient in the long run.

For areas that don’t have building requirements for carports, you have the option to purchase a certified car port or a non-certified metal carport kit.

But regardless of whether you need a custom shelter to cover a boat dock or a standard steel carport to cover cars in a commercial parking lot; we’ve got you covered.

Making Adjustments or Adding onto Your Certified Steel Carport

If you decide you want to make adjustments or additions after you’ve assembled your carport, you may need a permit to do so; it depends on the extent of the work.

The same criteria that apply to installing a new car port apply to adding to an existing one. For example, if you plan to add electricity to your metal carport cover, you’ll likely have to get a permit in order to do so.

Even if your adjustments or additions seem minor, it’s better to be safe and check with local planning authorities in your city or county to make sure you comply with all zoning regulations.

Metal Carports vs. Steel Carport Kits

We understand that some people want to assemble their own carports. For that reason, we also sell prefabricated, do-it-yourself carport kits.

There are several reasons why you may want to assemble it yourself. You may have a general contractor that you’ve worked with on previous construction projects and want them to install your car port. Or, if you’re a general contractor yourself, there may be a specific way you want to set it up.

Some people have extremely busy schedules, and it can be difficult for them to meet our crew at their home or business. In those cases, we simply deliver metal carport kits to the address on the order and allow you to take it from there.

In addition, we sometimes offer discounts to customers who order DIY carport kits. The discounts are as much as 10 percent of the total order cost.
